What Is an IP Ban?
When you ban a user's account on Discord, they could theoretically create a new Discord ID and rejoin your server. To address issues like spam or abuse, Discord allows server admins to set bans that block users based on their IP address.
An IP ban ensures that even if a banned user creates a new account, they won’t be able to rejoin your server.
Note: IP bans can unintentionally affect other users sharing the same IP address as the offending user. To avoid this, consider using a simple server kick as a first step.
What Happens When You’re Banned on Discord?
Whether the ban is temporary or permanent, users banned by a server admin are immediately kicked from the server and cannot rejoin. Here’s what happens:
-
Banned users lose access to all server content and messages.
-
They can still communicate with individual users unless those users block them.
-
Temporary bans allow rejoining after a set time.
-
Permanent bans require appealing to the server admin to be revoked.
Important: All server bans on Discord are permanent unless manually revoked by an admin, even in the case of temporary bans.
How to Ban Specific IP Addresses on Discord
All server bans on Discord are IP-based, meaning banned users cannot create a new account to bypass the ban if they’re using the same IP address. Here’s how to ban a user:
-
Open your server and find the user you want to ban.
-
Right-click on their username to open the dropdown menu.
-
Click "Ban [username]".
-
Select a reason for the ban and choose whether to delete the user’s message history (e.g., past 24 hours or 7 days).
-
Confirm the ban.
That’s it! The user is now IP banned and cannot rejoin your server using the same IP address.
Why Use IP Bans?
IP bans are a powerful tool to prevent recurring spam, harassment, or abuse in your Discord server. However, use them with caution to avoid penalizing innocent users who share the same IP as the offending party.
